Hello, My Name Means

"Hello, My Name Means" is an HTML5 microsite that works with complex APIs to compile and analyze large data sets from 5 independent sources. We show you where the name has been, where it is now, and where its going.

Role: Copywriter

Award: Cannes Lion

Every experience generated by "Hello, My Name Means" pulls information from:

  • SSA.gov – We search for baby names in the public domain data SSA collected over the last 100+ years in the US. The extensive database—with more than 91 000 unique names—gives us an estimation of how many “Sarahs” and “Toms” are in the world and whether a name was more popular in the ’60s or the ‘80s or even today.

  • Wikipedia – Using various filters and flags to remove irrelevant content, we locate a suitable wikipedia article to find information about the origin of the name. We also use Google Translate to generate the variations of the name in English, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese.

  • Last.FM – We’ll search the most recent tracks on Last.FM to get an idea of what music the “Sarahs” or “Toms” of the world love. The algorithm will pull and analyze songs inspired by the name, so parents can check whether their baby will grow up to listen to rock, rap, or classical music.

  • Twitter & Instagram - Finally—to learn more about modern interests, ambitions and popularity—we go through hundreds of tweets and Instagram posts with particular query filters to get meaningful trends and content.

Within hours of launch, Hello, My Name Means received over 83.7k views with an average of 6 minutes spent on sight. Making the Johnson’s Baby brand part of babies’ lives even before they are born.

Virry

UNIT9 partnered with Fountain Digital Labs to create Virry, an edutainment iPad app. The interactive films were shot in the UAE by writer-director Martin Percy. This breakthrough app allows kids to feel like they’re playing with real animals. Children are able to interact with lions, rhinos, giraffes and meerkats while also developing different cognitive skills.

Awards: The Webby Awards, BAFTA

Kids can build a connection with endangered animals by feeding or playing with them. They can also watch the animals that appear in the interactive videos LIVE, filmed on streaming HD cameras.

The iPad game mechanics are built into the raw film footage, allowing children to interact with wildlife naturally; they tilt the iPad to feed the meerkats, shake the device to make the baby rhino run and keep it very still when the animals needs to rest. Children also use their voice to communicate with the animals.

Reflektor

Directed by Vincent Morisset, this interactive music video explores several themes in Arcade Fire’s single “Reflektor.” The project made in collaboration with Aaron Koblin of Google Creative Lab San Francisco pushes the boundaries of what can be achieved with the WebGL graphic libraries, a modern web browser and a smartphone.

Role: Case Study

Not only was this an incredibly ambitious Chrome Experiment, it was also the launch of Arcade Fire’s latest album. There was no wiggle room on the delivery date. We assembled expert talent from all over the world – working round the clock across many timezones to get the job done.

To facilitate the workflow the development team created a centralized web toolkit, to enable the distributed team access to all the visual parameters and full control of the aesthetic aspects of the project.

Vincent’s Just a Reflektor received widespread recognition across press and industry awards, culminating in an Emmy Award for Interactive Media.

About Scribd

Working in-house at Scribd as the copywriter and then marketing manager gave me the opportunity to work cross-functionally with some of the best creatives, engineers, and designers working in the Bay Area. I was lucky enough to work on the company’s first rebrand and was a foundational voice in the direction of our mission, values, and brand personality.

At the end of the first rebrand, I also produced a series of videos about Scribd’s employees.
